Background

Dugongs features the double bass to show that it's not just the fundament of the orchestra, but it too can swirl and turn, glide and roll and hover with majesty, just like a dugong.

 

Pelican Rock brings to mind a picture of a warm, summer's morning beside a swamp with clay banks, bull rushes and with the water surface rippling with schools of small native fish skimming just out of sight. Out of the river gum's shadows emerges a pelican. It waddles towards the edge of the swamp, gauging the size of the fish, the depth of the water and thinks up a strategy. It pauses, checking it's really dinner time, then rocks on to get to work.
